In the complex formulation system of cosmetics, fragrances play an indispensable and crucial role, and their functions and effects are manifested in multiple dimensions.

I. Core Functions: Aroma Creation

(I) Masking the Odor of the Substrate

The raw material substrates of cosmetics often have unpleasant odors that are either natural or generated during processing, such as the greasy smell of oils and the special odors of certain active ingredients. The primary function of fragrances is to effectively cover up these unpleasant substrate odors with their unique scents, providing consumers with a more comfortable using experience. For example, in skin care products with plant extracts as the main ingredients, the extracts themselves may have a bitter or grassy smell. After adding fragrances, these odors can be skillfully masked, making the product emit a pleasant fragrance.

(II) Endowing with a Unique Aroma

Fragrances can endow cosmetics with unique aroma styles, ranging from fresh and elegant floral notes to rich and mellow oriental notes, as well as vibrant fruity notes. The diverse range of fragrance types can meet the personalized aroma preferences of different consumers. Brands can create exclusive product aromas through carefully formulated fragrances, forming a unique olfactory logo for the brand and enhancing product recognition. For instance, some high-end perfume-style body washes can make consumers feel as if they are in a romantic fragrance world during the bathing process, enhancing the sense of pleasure and ritual in use.

(III) Boosting Purchase Intentions

As a highly contagious sensory experience, aroma has a significant impact on consumers' purchase decisions. When consumers select cosmetics at the counter, a pleasant aroma can instantly attract their attention and evoke a sense of favorability, thereby increasing their intention to purchase. According to market research data, cosmetics with a good aroma often have a higher sales conversion rate compared to similar products that are fragrance-free or have an unpleasant odor, which highlights the important value of fragrances in the marketing aspect.

II. Potential Efficacy: Assisting Product Stability

Some spices, in addition to emitting scents, also possess properties such as antibacterial, anti-corrosion, and anti-mildew. Appropriately adding such fragrances to cosmetics can, to a certain extent, slow down the growth and reproduction of microorganisms, inhibit the spoilage rate of products, extend the shelf life of cosmetics, ensure the safety and stability of products during use, and allow consumers to use the products for a longer time, avoiding waste caused by product deterioration.

III. Composition and Classification of Fragrances

Fragrances are collectively referred to as daily chemical fragrances and flavorings. They are not a single component but a complex mixture composed of various spices and other additives, and their specific formulations are usually trade secrets of enterprises. In cosmetics, fragrances are formulated by dissolving organic solvents and spices. Spices are mainly divided into two categories: natural spices and synthetic spices. Among them, natural spices are further divided into animal natural spices and plant natural spices. In the cosmetics field, due to factors such as scarce sources, high costs, and the resistance of some consumers to animal ingredients, animal spices are rarely used. They are mainly used for formulating fragrances or perfumes. Plant spices are widely applied and are often processed into forms such as essential oils and absolute oils and added to cosmetics.

It is worth noting that the odor performance of spices is not absolute. Many spices in their pure state or at high concentrations may emit unpleasant odors, and they will only exhibit charming scents that are pleasing to the nose when diluted to an appropriate concentration, which also reflects the professionalism and complexity of fragrance formulation techniques.
